I spend much time on other people's computers - I'd like to be able to hack for 30 minutes on an idea, but unfortunately, it isn't easy. I have to download and install numerous software packages, like python, django, subversion, an SSH client etc. So I decided to put all that in a flash drive and take it around with me.

Here is what it includes:

Not too shabby!

I'll play around with it and I'll update this post. Of course the ultimate test is to use it on another computer, and that'll happen next week.

Orestis:

I have created a very similar portable development environment. Let me know if your setup is not working, and I will email you instructions.

I'm thinking about creating a zip archive of the setup I use, and posting it for download somewhere, along with a tutorial on how to use it.

So far it's working. I don't like portable python too much -- Maybe I'll bite the bullet and just buy movable python, to help making it open source too.

I'm also looking for a decent file browser - I use total commander, but I don't know if it can be made portable.

Comparing notes could be fun, please post a tutorial on your take!

Orestis:

I'm at work now, so I won't be able to post something until later.

For your information, you don't need 'Portable Python' or 'Movable Python'. Plain old python works fine.

I'll write more later,

Wade & Orestis:

I'm putting the final touches on it now. I just registered a domain name, and I'm setting up an account with Amazon S3 to host the download, because it's approximately 50MB.

I should have something to show later tonight or possibly tomorrow, depending on how much work my wife has waiting for me when I get home.

Well, I've got a very rough, and very incomplete site up:

http://www.instantdjango.com

If you guys would like to help me test this out, I would love bug reports. I haven't finished posting the first tutorial yet...hopefully I'll get to it later today or tomorrow.

I'm sure the website and the portable environment still have all sorts of problems.

For now could we keep this to ourselves? I don't want any publicity until the first tutorial is finished and the bugs are worked out.

Send feedback to instant.django@gmail.com

Thanks,
cjlesh
